Joanna Lumley |
| Joanna became very
popular as Purdey in The
New Avengers, and appeared in many TV series throughout the 70s and
80s. She wrote a column in The Times for a while. Her writing revealed
an intelligent and humourous individual, and indeed, one frequently feels
this in her performances. That must have made it all the harder when her
career took a (happily, temporary) dip a few years ago, before the creation
of her triumphantly monstrous Patsy swept her to higher fame than ever
before. Fans will remember the Avengers episode in which she had
to pretend to be Purdey's disreputable double, and, in a very small way,
foretold the great things to come in Absolutely Fabulous. I cherish
the moment in the AbFab episode where the young Patsy and Edina
are seen walking down the King's Road - with Patsy sporting the famous
Purdey haircut! Joanna has also made some interesting travel programmes. In BBC1's Girl Friday she was "marooned" on a desert island with a camera crew following her survival efforts. In BBC1's In the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon she took part in a trek following in the footsteps of her own grandparents from India through Tibet to Bhutan. AbFab fans can explore sites starting here, and there are also lists (try "ET groups "alt.tv.absolutely-fabulous" and "alt.tv.ab-fab")devoted to the programme.
